Developing Fractions Sense

Student Workbook A

The Developing Fractions Sense Student Workbook A consists of 32 short lessons which focus on and expand upon 3rd grade Common Core Math fractions standards. In addition, the workbook includes five enrichment lessons based on 4th and 5th grade fractions standards.

Each lesson begins with an instructional component, which is followed by a set of exercises. Visual fraction models, such a fraction blocks, rectangular grids and number lines are used to enable students to develope a conceptual understanding of fractions.

Besides its intended use with 3rd grade students, the workbook may also be used with 2nd grade gifted students and 4th or 5th grade students who need a foundation in fractions.

A lesson with a grade 3 class on equivalent fractions.

Fraction blocks, rectangular grids and the number line are used to ensure that students develop a sound foundation of key concepts related to fractions, such as unit fractions, the meaning of a fraction, equivalent fractions, and comparing fractions with the same denominator or the same numerator. The enrichment lessons include adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, dividing by a unit fraction, and taking a multiple of a fraction.

The availability of the fraction blocks are essential for the enrichment lessons and highly recommended for the regular lessons. The Developing Class Set A for Thirty Students, DFS-C1030A, includes a set of attractive plastic fraction blocks and a student workbook for each of thirty students, as well as a teacher guide with answer key.
