Day2 Hands-On Equations®

Verbal Problems Workshop

This Day2 workshop is designed for middle school teachers, grades 6 - 8. Elementary teachers of gifted students and high school teachers of students struggling with algebra will also find these ideas and techniques helpful. Previous experience with Hands-On Equations® and/or attendance at a full-day Making Algebra Child's Play® workshop is highly recommended. A brief review of the methods used in Hands-On Equations to solve equations will be demonstrated prior to presenting verbal problems on each level.

The focus of the workshop will be the representation of verbal problems using Hands-On Equations. We will see how the game pieces or the pictorial notation can be used to represent and solve verbal problems, including number problems, consecutive number problems, age, coin and distance problems (including rowing downstream and upstream). Examples will be presented from all three levels of Hands-On Equations.

You will be delighted to use the game pieces to solve verbal problems such as the following:

. Four times a number, increased by, is the same as three times the number, increased by 9. Find the number.

. Sarah played the piano three days in a row. Each day she played twice as long as the previous day. If she played 24 minutes on the last day, how many minutes did she play on the first day?

. 2/3 of a number increased by 4, is the same as 1/3 of the number, increased by 8. Find the number.

. Two wagons leave the same location and travel in opposite directions. One wagon goes 6 miles per hour faster than the other. The slower wagon leaves at noon, while the faster one leaves at 2:00 pm. If at 4:00 pm the wagons are 36 miles apart, how fast does each wagon travel? (PICTORIAL)

. Jose is 6 years younger than twice Juan's age. In 5 years, Juan will be Jose's present age. How old is each?
