Since 1986, we have made Algebra Child’s Play for more than a million students in grades 3 – 8. Our award-winning Hands-On Equations program consists of algebra manipulatives and an instructional guide to ensure student success in solving linear equations. Our Developing Fractions Sense program uses fraction tiles to give students in grades 3 – 5 a strong conceptual understanding of fractions.

Dr. Henry Borenson, Inventor of Hands-On Equations

Dr. Henry Borenson, the company’s President, has been a mathematics educator for over 50 years. He has taught inner-city students in the South Bronx of New York City and high-achieving students at Stuyvesant High School in New York City. Among his talented students at Stuyvesant were Lisa Randall, Brian Greene, and Noam Elkies, all of whom have attained international recognition in physics or mathematics.   As a K-12 Mathematics Coordinator in the 1980s, Dr. Borenson became aware of many students’ algebra difficulties, particularly in solving linear equations. He engaged in a two-year research project that culminated in developing the Hands-On Equations Learning System, for which he received a U.S. patent. He then started his private company, Borenson and Associates, to disseminate the program to school districts in the United States. He and about two dozen colleagues provided the Making Algebra Child’s Play workshop to more than 50,000 K-8 educators in the United States from 1995 to 2020. Phi Delta Kappa (PDK), a professional educational organization, sponsored many workshops. To disseminate the Hands-On Equations instructional approach outside of the United States, he developed the Hands-On Equations 1 app, available in Spanish, Brazilian, Portuguese, French, and Hebrew. More recently, Dr. Borenson developed the Hands-On Equations Fractions program to enable students in grades 5 – 8 to extend their ability to solve equations to those containing fractional coefficients. Presently, Dr. Borenson and his wife, Elizabeth, make their home in Jerusalem, Israel.
